Tanya phoned Molly on Monday morning. “Hey, long time, eh?”

“Long time,” Molly said. “Sorry.”

“It’s okay. How’s your arm?”

“Still a bit sore. But I can lift things now. Reckon I could make a very gentle backhand. Good job it’s my left.”

“Very.” Some muffled noises, as if Tanya was shifting around. “No point in stopping your tennis career before it’s even off the ground.”

“Just getting back to work would be good.” A whine settled at the back of Molly’s throat. “Gary’s supposed to be phoning me today.”

“Excellent. So you’ll know?”

“If my physio assessment has reached HR. I don’t know.” Molly pinched the bridge of her nose. “Feels like I’ve been off for forever.”

“I feel for you.”

Molly grabbed her breakfast from the toaster. She squeaked as it singed her fingers. “Anyway, how’s you?”

Turned out Tanya was going up in the world. Promotion at work, new boyfriend who accepted her bisexuality in a way that most blokes failed. Her gran had given her some money for her birthday. “I really want the new PlayStation. It has 4K resolution and an upgraded GPU.”

Molly made a noise that suggested she was listening, although she had no clue what the technical details meant.

“Thomas said he’ll let me bring it to his, and we can use his big TV. We only have a thirty-two inch.”

After glancing at her own TV, half the size of Tanya’s at home, Molly made another noise of half-interest. “Lucy has a Wii. We’re going to play it when we can both stand up and use our arms.”

“Lucy?”

“I met her at physio group. She’s a police constable working in traffic. She’s pretty cool.”

“I’ll try to come visit some time.” A chuckle. “Need to make sure this new friend is almost as nice as me.”

Molly nodded. Then she realised Tanya couldn’t see her. “Okay.”

“Bradley saw your Adele the other day. At school.”

“Oh.” Molly brightened.

Bradley, Tanya’s brother, was in year ten. “Yeah. He said she looked like someone had hung a dark cloud over her.”

“She’s struggling a bit.” Molly sighed. “A group of boys are picking on her. And she still doesn’t like the new babysitter. I don’t know.” She put her phone on speaker and bent to the fridge to get out some spread.

“I’ll ask him to keep an eye. He said to me yesterday he remembers when she took her first steps.”

The memory made Molly smile. “Actually, that’d be really good. Be good for her to have an older kid to look out for her.”

“No problem.”

Molly stood and grabbed a knife. “I might visit before I go back if I can.”

“Great idea. We could do a pizza night at mine. Get a movie or something?”

Delight fizzed as Molly spread her toast. Crumbs went on the counter, but she’d get those once she had finished. “Amazing. I’ll text you when I know.”

“Ace. So any other news?”

The urge to tell Tanya about Kudzi sprang forth, but for some reason Molly held back. Perhaps it was that she was living a new life in Bristol. Tanya was part of her younger years, not this adult she had become, with a bedsit and a job at the police.
